Our Inaugural Week of 2023 Homeschooling + Questions & Answers

Bird’s eye view:

  • Monday: ROCKED IT. It was one of those days that made you feel like “I am on the right path!”
  • Tuesday: great day- yay!
  • Wednesday: I was feeling a bit tired. The novelty had worn off and we had appointments, so it felt like a chaotic day.
  • Thursday was rainy, but cozy. The kids were fine but I was overstimulated at the end of the day after running errands and going to school.
  • Friday is today, and I know it will be a great one. Fridays have a certain energy. Plus, Fridays tend to be a bit lighter. We will do math. H will finish her final draft for her paper. Reading for everyone. Then H and I want to can something. K has a date.

Takeaways

  • The girls were able to enjoy playing with their friends each day after school because our local schools won’t be back in a week or so. I’m happy they can have some time to play before all the activities start up again in September.
  • The new structure of classes on the hour with downtime between them feels right. Both kids like this new structure. We’ve never done it before. Overall, it takes longer but is more relaxing.
  • Nicole, the Math Lady.
  • I am readjusting to the need to be mentally present. Between 9:00 and 12:00, I’m fully present within my four walls. It’s a great feeling for me, as someone who thrives on boundaries. The kids, the lessons and the housework are all that matters.
  • This year, I am unsure whether we will use tokens for screentime. We’ve used them for years and they’ve been a great tool. I hope that when my kids reach an age where we have more freedom with screen time, it will be a good thing. To be determined.
  • I’m bringing back read aloud time. I wasn’t certain if we would stick with it, since H and i are doing a reading club and i read with K during her daily lessons. But we all enjoy it so I’m sticking with it. We’re starting The Hunger Games! I’ll let y’all know if I regret this decision.
