Since I started using my Lumen and increasing my Strength Training as well as noticing the positive response my body has to more protein, I have tried to be more conscious about adding enough to my diet.
After tracking for a while to be able to report back, I can say that my body is currently thriving on 90-100 g of protein a day. After tracking my intake for a few months, I’m able to say that at the moment, my body thrives on 90-100g of protein per day.
This is much higher than the.36g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight (.8g per pound) that’s usually recommended. If I were to follow that recommendation, I would aim for 43 g of daily protein.
Dietitians of Canada, American College of Sports Medicine and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics all agree that athletes should consume more protein. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the Dietitians of Canada suggest that athletes need more protein. This would mean that I should aim for 65-108 grams of protein per day.
Although I work out almost every day, I don’t think I would consider myself a sportsperson. By increasing my protein intake, I’ve noticed improved muscle definition, balanced blood sugars, feeling fuller for longer and more sustained energy.
It should go without saying that I don’t recommend this to anyone. I am not a RD, and I don’t know about your specific health issues. However, I encourage you to experiment if you aren’t getting the results you desire. It’s through self-experimentation that I have learned so much about my body.
What are my favorite sources of protein? These are the proteins I reach for most often!
