How about “Beginning the Journey: Bar Harbor, Maine – Part 1”?

After New Haven we hopped back in the truck to head north. The drive from Boston to Bar Harbor, ME was just 4.5 hours.

The unique rental was located right on the edge of town. This allowed us to walk anywhere, which was very convenient. The building itself is an old convent, converted into a three-story vacation home with 7 bedrooms. The house was creaky but clean and beautifully updated. The kids had their own bedrooms, which was great for maximizing sleep quality for the entire week.

We met my brother’s family, who had driven in from Canada. They were also on a summer road trip. We unpacked, changed and walked.2 miles to our first reservation at McKay’s Public House.

It was said that summer dinner spots are hard to get in and reservations should be made as early as possible. Only the nicer restaurants accept reservations, so even though the dinner was excellent and the children did well, I’d file this as a “date night”, not necessarily kid-friendly. The kids enjoyed their lobster bisque and mussels, even though I tried to steer them toward the kids’ menu.

Stathas-style, we started with a martini and then enjoyed one of the most delicious seafood pastas I’ve ever had, thanks to a generous ratio of homemade pasta to seafood. After dinner, we walked back home, where the kids were given a movie to watch and a communication device, while the adults headed out to the coast. We enjoyed misty conditions in Maine on a summer’s evening less than half a mile away.
