This salad is a simple, but tasty, way to showcase fresh Sumo Citrus Mandarins. It’s a salad that uses a healthy, quick vinaigrette. Add a protein to make this a meal or a side dish!
Easy. I bet you I could get you hooked on these sumo Citrus mandarins in three words. to. peel. Peel.
In Japan, where they originated from, the Sumo Citrus Mandarins are apparently so tasty that they are frequently given as gifts. They are now grown in California, and can be found all over the US. I’ve found them in Whole Foods and Harris Teeter. But you’ve sent me messages via Instagram letting me know that you’ve found them also at Publix and Sprouts. You can find a list of stores who carry Sumo Citrus by clicking here. But you should also ask your local store if they have them.
Sweet fruit can be identified by its large bumps and large knob at the top, called “the top knot”. However, like Honeycrisp cherries or apples, it is only available in the growing season from January to April.
They are a favorite in our household. Because they are expensive and difficult to grow, and require special handling to get them from seed to plate, I started by buying only for myself. Once the girls had a taste, they were hooked. They now ask for these by name. They are the first things to disappear when I put them on their snack plates.
