Advice for First-Time Moms: What I Wish I Knew

It’s been so long since I felt butterflies in my stomach and wondered what it would be like to become a mother. I remember rubbing the big belly of my tummy and trying to imagine what she would be like. I remember feeling nervous about the predicted sleepless night. I was grateful to be able carry a child and ready to stand up and sleep without grunting again. It was an exciting time to be expecting my first child, with a mixture of emotions. Now, six years later, I have a few things that I would like to share with a new mom.

There is so much happiness ahead for you!

You do. It’s been an incredible privilege to be able to watch my children grow. You’ll see your child’s first smile just when you thought you were going to lose it.

Those first two years are the most difficult.

Do not compare the newborn experience with that of toddlers and young children. Do not compare your newborn child’s experience with that of another mom who is having her third baby. It’s best to stop comparing. Each baby is unique, as are all moms.

You won’t be able to complete any of the projects you planned to do during maternity leave.
