Ten Strategies to Enhance Your Child’s Reading Confidence

This made me go back and review what I have learned about raising children who love to read, and make a mental note of how I can support Kaitlyn on her reading journey.

It is an important milestone for our children to learn how to read. It can be a difficult task, and some children may struggle or seem more timid. There are a few easy things we as parents can do to help our children gain confidence in reading.

Reduce the pressure

Take a deep breathe if you’re feeling stressed. When it comes to teaching our children to read, we can relax. It’s okay if your child doesn’t pick it up right away. They’ll eventually get it. Be supportive and patient.

Enjoy your work instead of working

Children are taught through play. Unstructured play also plays a role. Adults are not immune to this. You will approach your work with less passion if you do not find it enjoyable or fun. You can help your child develop their desire to learn by showing them that reading is enjoyable.

This can be done by choosing silly books, reading in an expressive voice or acting out actions from the book. Nothing makes a child smile more than to hear you “oink”, like a pig, or wave your arms like an octopus.
