List of bucket list trips Have you got one? A family sailing trip to the Caribbean was a top choice for us. David loves sailing, I love adventures, and the girls love beautiful destinations. It ticks all the boxes. David and I took a small trip, just the two us, 2012, and learned the wrong ways to plan and implement a trip of this kind. We made many mistakes.
The experience was a thousand times better and more magical when we returned with our kids to the British Virgin Islands in 2019. In 2023, our family was well-prepared and knowledgeable about how to make a sailing trip in the Caribbean an unforgettable experience.

Let’s now dive into the highlights from this amazing adventure of a sailing trip with your family in the Caribbean.
Day 1: Charlotte To Tortola
Charlotte, NC was our departure point mid-morning of a Friday. We flew straight from Charlotte to St. Thomas. We stayed on St. Thomas in 2019, but we decided to get to Tortola, BVIs the following morning to have a more seamless transition. We took a taxi from the airport to the ferry. Before boarding the fast-ferry to Tortola, we had the opportunity to grab a welcome drink and some food. We arrived just as the sun began to set after an hour. After a 5 minute taxi trip, we arrived at The Moorings.
Moorings is unique because it has its own property on Tortola, and offers a great set-up for you to enjoy either before or after you board your yacht. After checking in, we dropped off our luggage and went straight to the restaurant. David and I wanted to eat, and the girls were eager to swim. So we chose a table near the pool. I felt like we had started our vacation right there and then!
