When I first became curious about Homeschooling I asked any homeschooler that I met how they did XYZ. I was looking for a guide to help me implement a successful homeschool.
Then, I tried to convince everyone that I was doing an excellent job (AKA trying to make it seem like a “real” school). Now I know that homeschooling is different for each family. There’s no right or wrong method; it’s whatever works best for you.
A year-round strategy works for us. This allows us to teach our children in harmony with the seasons. We started the “new” school year early in July, anticipating our August packed with travel. We began strong to prepare for December. We lighten up December for a variety of reasons, including that it is one of our favourite times of the year, we want to have fun with holiday themes, focus on family, and give, as well as watch movies.
We are now officially in December, and we have begun to plan and prepare for the month. This is perfect timing as Finley keeps us very busy while we try to figure out how we can get a puppy. We also debate whether to hire some training help ( Please tell me how I can stop her biting during play).
In December we don’t stop learning, but just shift our focus. We always place a high priority on life skills and fostering a sense of family in our homeschooling goals. So we focus more on those areas and lessen the emphasis on others. This is what it looks like:
How we homeschool during the holidays
My crew sticks with math. Yes, I’m aware, but I find it most helpful if it is a constant drip. We make it more fun by doing less frequent lessons. We use the multiplication cards to drill facts every day in a trivia setting. We play board games that are math-related. They code . They do things like that.
